The pair were inspired by the imagery and instrumental soundtracks of movies and TV shows such as "Drive," "Blade Runner," "Days of Thunder," "Thief," "Miami Vice" and "Knight Rider." They wanted to form a band that played a genre similar to the instrumental soundtracks of these movies but with original lyrics. The Midnight formed in 2012 after band members Tyler Lyle and Tim Daniel McEwen met at a co-writing workshop in North Hollywood.

In a synesthesia-like way, the genre uses both the sounds of the music and the artwork of the album covers to create a rain-soaked neon landscape similar to "Blade Runner" or "Miami Vice." The band itself uses its music to create imagery of a scene that is a blend of retro-futurism of '80s car commercials and the moody neon-noir of Michael Mann's "Thief." Imagery is important to fans and groups of the synth-wave genre. The Midnight is a synth-wave band, a genre that is a callback to the '80s in both music and visual aesthetics. Through the power of music, The Midnight creates a vibrant landscape where IROC-Z's, high-top sneakers, neon lighting and retro aesthetics rule the scene.
